Three bridesmaids, almost ready…

Here’s a shot I took just before Natalie and Sam’s wedding last year, of their bridesmaids getting ready.

Taken on my Fuji X100, it’s one of those shots that I fired off and thought nothing of afterwards.

I’m not the biggest fan of the camera – well, at least not at weddings. While it’s great for photojournalism, it can be slow and unresponsive. Having said that, I do love the 23mm focal length it offers and based on this photo (and a few others), I have since purchased a 23mm lens for my Fuji XT1s.

Anyway, I remember at the time I was struggling to get a decent photo of their bridesmaids – they were all getting ready in a small bedroom and I didn’t want to get in the way within such a cramped space.

My Nikon DSLR was just to bulky and awkward to take in there and at the time I only had the 35mm and 56mm Fuji lenses with me – focal ranges that were just too close to capture the atmosphere of the room. Fortunately, I had my Fuji X100 with me, so I just popped in there, took this shot and quickly got out of their way.

As you’ve probably noticed, I’m a big fan of darker monochrome images – especially shots that feature a silhouette here and there. However, I think what really completes the shot is the bridesmaid on the right, smiling at the other two. Whether it’s pre-wedding nerves or excitement, or perhaps both, I’m not sure. But I do think it’s a lovely shot and it is easily one of my best from last year.
